FACTS & HISTORY: Suiteki is a water-dropper (Japanese: 水滴, Hepburn: suiteki, Chinese: 水滴; pinyin: shuǐdī) is a small device used in East Asian calligraphy as a container designed to hold a small amount of water.
"According to Asian calligraphic traditions, there are “four treasures of the study”: the brush, ink, paper and inkstone. Just as crucial, however, is the humble water dropper, which was used to wet inkstones for use.
During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), calligraphy in Japan was an art form of the ruling class and the literati, and the decorative water dropper became a popular writing accessory, available in a plethora of shapes and sizes, and often inscribed or decorated with literati ideals or motifs."
